About Bowman-Haley State Park

Bowman-Haley State Park is located in southwestern North Dakota on the northern shore of Bowman-Haley Reservoir, a man-made lake formed by the damming of the North Fork of the Grand River. The park spans rolling grasslands and shallow coulees typical of the High Plains region, showcasing mixed-grass prairie ecology and providing habitat for diverse wildlife including mule deer, white-tailed deer, prairie dogs, and numerous bird species. Established in 1971, the park serves as a recreational hub for boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and seasonal hunting opportunities. The reservoir is stocked with species like walleye, northerns, and catfish, making it especially popular for anglers. Visitors can enjoy several campsites with facilities, picnic areas, and boat ramps that allow easy access to the lake. The park’s landscape offers expansive views of the water juxtaposed with the native prairie terrain. It is a favored destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quiet and scenic environment in southwestern North Dakota. Nearby historical sites and small towns provide additional cultural interest, while the park’s open spaces are ideal for birdwatching and photography. With mild summer temperatures and cold winters, Bowman-Haley is a year-round destination, offering activities suited to each season including winter ice fishing and snowmobiling on the reservoir. This state park represents a blend of natural beauty and outdoor recreation within an accessible setting in the western part of the state.
